In my opinion popular culture can be defined as the culture that society lives by today. It is the cars we drive, the house we live in, the cloths we wear, the hair style we have, the list could go on forever... What this means to me is that society has come to depend on the popular culture today. We no longer make choices on our own any longer, we depend on what the media provides us.
An understanding of popular culture is imperative in business today. Marketing is part of popular culture and in my profession as a consultant if people don't respond to businesses marketing pleas then I would not have a job.
A popular culture artifact is society's obsession with body image. An example of this is Nicole Richie's body transformation from the first season of "The Simple Life" in 2004, to the horrific bikini photos that emerged in December 2005.

Tonia,
You were absolutely correct when you said that popular culture is what society lives by today. One thing that everyone should keep in mind is that just because someone or something is popular does not make it right but mainly appealing.
Also, marketing is a huge compliment to popular culture. Marketing or advertising really looks to the desires of people and what is currently "in".
Tonia, I also agree that society drives what is popular. What we are fed on a daily basis in the media, or on television, seems to steer us to what should be popular. This is why I agree with the marketing angle as well
